After graduating in textiles I have taught fine art and creative textiles in London and Nottingham. My interest has always been in textiles, especially the felt making process, and experimenting with wool in the same way an artist uses canvas and paint. I use the fibres in a painterly way to create texture and light effects in my work, while at the same time, allowing the fibres to speak for themselves. Using finest quality Merino wool and silk fibres, I can choose to, let the medium control the design, or immerse myself in a particular feature and control the fibres as if I were painting. In doing so I feel I have bridged the gap between fine art and textiles and given this ancient craft a more contemporary image.
I enjoy the creative freedom offered by the unpredictable nature of the felt making process, as the fibres move during the making of a picture. This adds to the excitement of creating a new piece. I have always been inspired by mixed media Art work and have introduced other fibres into my work including Bamboo fibres and cotton and silk noil. Working from my own photographs, atmosphere, light and colour at different times of the day have been my inspiration.I am continuing to discover new effects with the fibres and ways of creating shading and tones, to capture the ethereal nature of the ever changing landscape. My work continues to be inspired by nature and the diversity of its form and colours.
